Alex grew up in a small town longing for the culture and pace of a larger city. Constantly uncomfortable in his own skin, Alex found an identity as the lone goth kid in his conservative town. The jeering taunts and insults he drew became the soundtrack to his life.

A love of art gave him purpose, and Alex worked hard to develop the skill. After recieving a modest art scholarship, Alex met Curt Hawk in college, saving the freshman Curt from an overzealous member of the Campus Crusade with his patented goth spookiness. Ever self-deprecating, Alex and Curt bonded through a dark, self-aware sense of humor and a shared love of art.

Shortly before Curt's death, Alex met and fell in love with Sarah Matheson and moved to Chicago to be closer to her. The two eventally married in a small cerimony attended by close family and friends. Curt was notably absent, wrapped up in self-absorption and largely out of touch at that point with even his best friends. The marriage lasted two years, sadly ending in a brutal divorce in which Sarah took everything. Desperate and broken, Alex wandered back to his old haunts, squatting for six months before finally working up the courage to look up old friends and renew his relationships with them.

Alex is bothered by being unnoticed. He tends to worry irrationally about being forgotten, even by his close friends. Though he has grown out of his goth faze, the sense of being an outsider has never really left him, and he tends to be uncomfortable interacting with all but his best friends. His divorce has left him bitter, and questioning the value of emotional attachments. At a point where many of his peers are becoming comfortable with who they are, Alex is less sure than ever, and desperately searching for a valid identity.
