Season 9, Strip Number 1

Downfall is not affiliated with, nor necessarily endorses any site advertising here.

I first created Naomi as a love interest for Curt waaaaay back in the early days of the strip, before it's modern incarnation. For whatever reason, I never thought their dynamic really worked, so when I was working on a reboot, I decided to explore that a little and force them together out of a percieved neccessity. How scary would it be to be in the situation where you stopped someone from killing themself once, how far would you go to ensure it didn't happen again? Would you sacrifice your own happiness? What kind of person would be able to do that? It would certainly lead to resentment. Could you keep doing it once you started to hate that person? These sorts of fucked-up relationships continue every day, maybe in less extreme forms, but they're a part of many people's lives. And the strip wouldn't be Downfall without a generous dose of misery.

That said, there will, of course be plenty of humor, it won't all be melodrama and gloom. I really have high hopes for this season, though establishing a completely new dynamic is going to be a tough.

There's been a ridiculous amount of nudity lately, for whatever reason, however, I gotta say, it makes coloring a snap. Panel 2 is my tribute to Alberto Vargas, whose work in the '40's has inspired anyone who's ever tried to draw a cute girl, whether they know it or not. Vargas' art adorned everything from magazines to WWII aircraft, and he's probably the premier pinup artist of all time.

There's a new poll and an art incentive to vote for me on Top Web Comics below!

Thanks for reading!
