I was really trying to contrast a life-changing announcement with the humdrum unimportance of every-day life. Every time I've ever learned of a birth, a death, or any other important announcment, it's been while I was frittering away hours of my life doing things that seem that much more stupid in the face of the news. I used a lot more onomatopoeia than I normally do, to help draw out the moment and to sort of emphasize the boring passage of time. I really wanted the art to be decent for this one, so I spent a lot of time, including actually drawing perspective properly with a ruler instead of fudging it. I really did want to draw some strips of Chip soldiering in Iraq, but (this sounds incredibly lame) I never wanted to do the research to draw an accurate US Army uniform. Anyway I still think this is an effective strip, since Chip's been a regular character for the last 7 years. It truly made me sad the work on this one.
